SMARTER GRIDS NEED MORE

INTELLIGENT CYBERSECURITY

A cyberattack in the energy sector is possibly the most devastating scenario of all industrial cyber threats. Not only does the potential exist for safety failures impacting human lives, but even partial shutdowns of the grid could seriously impact all other sectors and the entire economy.

As digitalization increases connectivity between IT and OT networks, the risk of targeted OT attacks and destructive malware has also increased.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Smart Grid, and other modernization initiatives further increase risk by creating a larger
attack surface from massive numbers of new IIoT devices.

TIMELINE OF RECENT EVENTS

Group 4145

DECEMBER 2014

The FBI/DHS announced it had uncovered a sophisticated malware campaign targeting industrial control systems using a variant of the BlackEnergy malware. The campaign went back to at least 2011 and was generally attributed to a Russian hacker team known as Sandworm.

Group 4144

2015 – 2016

Cybersecurity analysts widely believe that Sandworm carried out destructive attacks on Ukrainian electric utilities that cut off power to hundreds of thousands of people.

Group 4143

MARCH 2018

The FBI/DHS confirmed that Russian government threat actors had successfully compromised US energy sector networks in a campaign going back to at least March 2016. The campaign leveraged compromised credentials to gain remote access to OT networks, after which they moved laterally and conducted reconnaissance. The FBI alert attributed the activity to a Russian group known as Dragonfly or Energetic Bear.
